“Another Great Week” Newsletter from Principal Ferguson
Dear Lancer Families,
A huge thank you to the SMPO for hosting Adam Peterson this past Tuesday. Adam Peterson is a former Kindergarten teacher, an author, and speaker who is trying to spread kindness through his idea of Be the Yellow. Mr. Peterson spoke with our students about how they can BE THE YELLOW in someone's day, meaning how students can brighten the lives of those around them. This could be a nice compliment, a smile, showing support, or giving a helping hand to others. Sometimes all it takes is a warm smile to brighten someone’s day and change their outlook. He engaged with the students by reading his children’s book to the K-4 students and having the 5-8 grade students write down as many kind words as they could in 3 minutes…all totalled, they came up with 161 kind words!! In the evening, Mr. Peterson shared this same message with our parents and shared portions of his TEDx Talk.. Thank you to all those who joined us. Check out more about Adam Peterson on his website. #betheyellow

The SMPS Lancers for Life Pro-Life Club is a largely activity-based club for 6th-8th grade students aimed at fostering a culture of respect for the dignity of all human life, from conception to natural death. Students participate in activities such as chalking the sidewalk outside St. Michaels with life-affirming messages, creating posters for Respect Life month in October, participating in a spiritual adoption program, creating cards for the elderly and lonely, visiting nursing homes, earning F.I.A., and much more. In addition to activities, the following topics are discussed briefly throughout the year in an age-appropriate manner: fetal development, abortion, healthy friendships, downs syndrome, the meaning of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, defending our beliefs, and end of life issues.
Club meetings take place before school from 7:00-7:25am on the first and third Wednesday of the month in the Lavin Learning Center Library. If you think your child may be interested, we will be holding a general interest/kick-off meeting for students on Wednesday, September 25th from 7:00-7:25am in the Lavin Learning Center school library. There will be flyers posted around school and classrooms alerting students. There is also be a signup link through signup genius below. Please sign up your child on this link so that I will be able to easily e-mail those interested with more information about the club’s activities throughout the year.
The club will be moderated by parent volunteers, Gina Carroll and Diana LaHood, and student-led by 7th grader, Sammy LaHood. If you have any questions or are interested in helping, please contact Gina Carroll at sjsginacarroll@yahoo.com. Please see the attached flyer about our kick-off meeting and our meeting dates for the school year.
