“Another Great Week” Newsletter from Principal Ferguson

Dear Lancer Families,

Today, students and staff practiced a variety of safety drills, including a Fire Drill, Severe Weather Drill, and an ALICE (lockdown) Drill.  I am beyond impressed with the level of maturity and seriousness that the students had throughout these drills.  They were respectful, acted in a safe manner when navigating the building, and listened intently to the staff as they awaited further directions.  These drills are important to practice throughout the school year so students are well informed and prepared should a real emergency situation arise. I take the safety of our students and staff very seriously and do not tolerate misbehavior during these drills, whether they are planned drills or false alarms.  Please talk with your students this weekend and ask them if they have any questions about procedures, process, or anything else regarding these drills.  We will have many more planned, yet unannounced, drills throughout the year to make sure all are prepared.

Testing next week: IOWA and CogAT testing in grades 3-8 will take place next week.  This will mean modified class schedules throughout the week to accommodate these testing sessions.  This data helps us look at student growth and other trends to help us improve our instruction.  Unlike local public schools, we do not have any State Reporting tied to student performance.  This information is kept local at our school for our use only.  The scores/data also helps us when making decisions about Math and English placements in our upper grades.  Please help us ensure that all students are prepared for their testing by getting a good night sleep, eating a healthy breakfast, and coming to school on time. Students should have at least two sharpened Number 2 pencils and an eraser for Tuesday.

Pictures Monday: On Monday, September 11th, we will be taking School Yearbook Pictures.  All students are to wear their school uniforms for these pictures.  8th Graders will be taking Graduation Pictures later in the school year…this is when they will be allowed to wear their dress clothes for the formal pictures.  Your child should have brought home a picture order form last week.

Make it a great day Lancers!

SCARCE works with an organization out of Indiana called Danielle Cares for Chairs (click for full .pdf) that recycles bread tags to raise funds for providing wheelchairs and other forms of mobility equipment for those in need. Starting now, please save your bread tags and send them to school with your child. Each homeroom has a collection container in their room. This collection will run through the end of the school year and continue into next school year. Thank you for supporting this awesome cause!

St. Francis High School is a college-preparatory, co-educational Catholic high school located in Wheaton, Illinois and is celebrating more than 65 years of promoting spiritual, academic, physical and social development in students.

  • I am writing to invite your incoming 8th-grade students to take part in a test prep course for the Catholic high school entrance exam (the "HSPT").

This will be an IN-PERSON class at the Westchester Library.

    WHY TAKE THE CLASS?:

Our students have seen great success on their exams over the last few years by not only earning acceptance into the schools of their choice (including Fenwick, St. Ignatius, Benet, Nazareth Academy, Loyola, Montini, and Marmion) but also scholarship money and awards. These lessons are also beneficial for overall basic skills and enrichment for the school year.

    WHO WE ARE:

Megan Kucia is a high school English teacher with 13 years of teaching experience, five of them being in middle school, and Mrs. Amoroso is a middle school math teacher with over 25 years of experience. Mrs. Amoroso and I began this test prep class nine years ago while teaching middle school together at St. Francis in La Grange, and we have had the opportunity to work with students from many area schools, such as St. John of the Cross, St. Francis Xavier, St. Cletus, Our Lady of Peace, St. Joe, St. John's Lutheran LG, Divine Providence, St. Vincent Ferrer, McClure Jr. High, St. Isaac Jogues, and more.

I have attached the registration form (which includes the link to register). Please feel free to distribute it at your discretion, and let me know if you have any questions! Thank you for your time.
